Bumblefoot: A Real Case Study

This is a real-life account of one Cayuga duck’s journey through diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and the lessons learned along the way.

About this Guide

My desire to write this booklet came from experiencing bumblefoot firsthand. When one of my Cayuga ducks, Nyx, developed bumblefoot, I realized there was plenty of information available online, but very little that helped me through the day-to-day reality of caring for a duck with bumblefoot.

I wanted to know:

  • How should I examine her foot?
  • What should I do next?
  • How should I treat the wound?
  • How long would it take to heal?

This booklet follows Nyx’s journey from the first signs of bumblefoot through treatment and recovery, sharing my observations, photographs, veterinary care, and the lessons I learned along the way.

What You’ll Find Inside

  • How I first noticed something wasn’t right
  • Photographs documenting each stage
  • Veterinary advice and treatment
  • The gradual healing process
  • What worked, what didn’t, and why
  • Reflections and lessons learned along the way

Is this guide for you?

This guide may be helpful if you:

  • Care for backyard ducks
  • Think one of your ducks may have or be developing bumblefoot
  • Enjoy learning from real-life experiences
  • Appreciate careful observation rather than quick fixes

About the photographs

The photographs in this booklet document Nyx’s treatment over time. Some images show an active foot injury and are included because they provide useful context for understanding the healing process.
